Fisheries Innovations Conference; Rotterdam November 6 – 7 2009
Background
The EU supports fisheries innovations, e.g. through the EFF. From this, individual countries develop their fisheries innovations agendas and innovation programs. Individual fishermen use these and private funds for their own innovations.
On behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), a two day conference will be organized for fishermen and policy makers on fisheries innovations.
The aim of this conference is an exchange of ideas and challenges of individual countries developing their fisheries innovation agendas and how fishermen innovate their fisheries. From this, we aim to identify promising approaches, novel ideas, as well as more synergy between initiatives. Furthermore information will be shared about a European Fisheries Technology Platform in creation (EFTP).
Aim
- A discussion between fishermen and policy makers from various countries.
- Present showcases of innovative approaches in fisheries.
- Sharing ideas and experiences from fishermen from Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Norway and The Netherlands.
Result
- An overview on promising approaches on innovation and policy.
- Advice from participants on how to develop and implement an applied fisheries innovation agenda.
- Influence on the EU fisheries innovation agenda.

By whom / For whom?
- The conference is intended primarily for fishermen and policy makers. This is not a scientific conference.
- Speakers are offered accommodation. All attendants are offered a complimentary dinner and lunches.

Presentations
Two types of presentations:- For each country a policy maker will outline how the national innovation agenda is being developed: How do the countries develop and implement their fisheries innovation agendas?
- From each country we welcome speakers from the fishing industry (mostly fishermen) presenting their own innovation(s). Examples include novel fishing techniques, novel marketing concepts and novel fishing plans.
Other
Afterwords a PDF-file will be made available for all participants, containing information like:- Showcases, discussion highlights, conclusions and closing statement.
- Opening and closing words by LNV, outlining the goal of the meeting and what was learned from this conference.
- Executive summaries of contributions (2 pages max. per contribution).
